SUMMER Reading Guide - Children's Literacy Program (Spark)
Organization: Foundation Learning & Skills SaskatchewanCategory: Education / Training / Teaching
Description: Be part of a caring and trained volunteer network that helps children with their reading skills. Our Spark program offers one-to-one reading support for elementary school students in grades 2-4, identified by the school as reading below grade level. The goal of the program is to bring their reading level up to grade level and improve their reading skills and habits. In 2023, 96% of teachers reported improved reading skills for students involved in Spark, parents have noticed significant positive changes in their children, and students themselves spoke positively about their experiences with Spark and their Reading Guides. Trained volunteers are matched with students and meet online over Zoom for 30-minute sessions four times a week for four weeks. The weekly schedule is determined by the Reading Guide's availability and the student's availability. Volunteers follow a structured program to help students take the next step from foundational, phonemic awareness, to understanding, comprehensive, and enjoying what they are reading. Spark is a little bit more than just reading practice; volunteers also practice trouble words and build on reading strategies using a variety of games and activities they would enjoy. If this is something you are interested in, apply today or call us at 306 652-5448. Group Volunteer
Organization: Results CanadaCategory: Education / Training / Teaching
Description: Results is a nonprofit advocacy organization of passionate staff and volunteers committed to generating the political will to end extreme poverty in low- and middle-income countries. We focus our work on global health, access to quality education and economic opportunities. What does political will mean? We believe in mobilizing everyday people (our volunteers) to influence the Government of Canada. We direct our energy and efforts at government decision makers like party leaders, Members of Parliament and senators because they have the power to improve policies and make the monetary investments needed to end extreme poverty. We also raise awareness by writing letters to the editor (LTEs) and op-eds, using social media, fundraising and more. Oftentimes the first step is putting these issues on the radar — and keeping the pressure on. It might seem like a small step, but it all adds up into impact. commitment: 1 year minimum, 1-2 hours per week on average support structure: Volunteers (virtually) meet in local groups on a monthly basis and rely on their group leader(s) for guidance. Attending other virtual calls and webinars led by Results staff is recommended. If you’re ready to learn about advocacy, causes and solutions to extreme poverty and committed to taking action every month, join us!
