Opportunity Description:

We are looking for volunteer Literacy Coaches to work one-on-one with adult learners. Our adult literacy program, Lead, builds confidence, supports personal growth, and enables individuals to reach their personal, academic, and employment goals. Lead is learner-centred and strength-based so there is no set curriculum – what you work on is based on the learner’s goals.   How does the program work?  You will be matched with an adult learner and will provide one-on-one support with reading, writing, speaking or math.  You will meet with the learner once per week.  You will meet in-person at a public library or virtually over Zoom.   You will be provided with a detailed Learning Plan which outlines potential resources and activities.  What is the commitment?   Meet with the learner for 1 to 1.5 hours per week plus 15-30 minutes of preparation per week.  Sessions are scheduled according to volunteer availability (daytime, evenings, or weekends); you are matched with a learner who has similar availability.  Minimum 6-month time commitment.  There is flexibility in our program to accommodate other commitments such as appointments, illness, and holidays.  What are the requirements to become a Lead Literacy Coach?  You must be 18 years or older, attend a Volunteer Orientation, complete a Volunteer Application Form with references, provide a Criminal Record Check, and agree to Foundations Learning policies & procedures.  Have strong literacy skills and have a minimum CLB 8 if English is an additional language.  Attend the Lead Literacy Coach Training (7 hours) and adhere to program expectations and guidelines, including maintaining regular communication with the Adult Literacy Coordinator for support & evaluation purposes.
